From Lake to Forest: My Journey with the Feed Your Demons Technique
In this post, I share my personal journey of applying the Feed Your Demons technique, which helped me transform a period of intense challenges. Initially, my guru described me as a lake surrounded by fire, a metaphor for the inner struggle I was facing. By visualizing my challenge as a dragon and feeding it with acceptance and understanding, I was able to turn a threat into an ally. The result was a profound shift: from lake to forest, symbolizing my growth and renewal.

Over the past 18 months, my life has been a roller coaster of emotions and challenges. I felt like I was constantly surrounded by a burning fire, a heat that consumed me and tested my patience and resilience at every turn. When I shared this with my guru, he described me as a lake surrounded by fire, a powerful image that perfectly captured what I was feeling: a surface calm, but with a hellish blaze all around.
I tried everything to deal with this situation: meditation, therapy, changing habits... Each of these attempts brought me some relief, but the fire remained, relentless, burning around me. Then I discovered a book called Feed Your Demons, and it completely changed the way I approached my challenges.
The Feed Your Demons Technique
The premise of the book is simple, yet profound: instead of fighting against your demons or trying to ignore them, you should feed them. This might sound strange at first, but the idea is to transform our challenges into allies, rather than enemies.
The practice involves personifying your problem as an entity – a demon, a monster, or in my case, a dragon – and visualizing it clearly. The key is to feed this entity with your own essence, which can be interpreted in various ways: acceptance, love, understanding... And in doing so, what was once a destructive force transforms into something entirely different.
My Inner Dragon
When I began practicing, I visualized my challenge as a large red dragon, breathing fire around me, fueling the flames that surrounded me. I, still seeing myself as the lake, was at the mercy of these flames, unsure of how to control them. Then I decided to feed the dragon with my own essence – my acceptance of the situation, my understanding of the challenges, and my genuine desire for transformation.
As I fed it, the dragon began to change. Its color shifted from fiery red to a cooler tone, a whitish-gray, almost blue. With this transformation, the dragon stopped being a threat, and instead of increasing the fire around me, it began to control it, to tame it.
From Lake to Forest
It was during one of these meditations that something surprising happened. Suddenly, I no longer saw myself as a lake. The fire around me had disappeared, and in its place, I perceived myself as a forest – dense, vibrant, full of life. The serenity of the lake gave way to the strength and resilience of the forest, something rooted and connected to the earth.
This transformation showed me that the challenges we face don't have to consume us. With the right approach, they can transform us, strengthen us, and help us grow. I am no longer just a lake surrounded by fire; I am a forest, ready to thrive.
Sharing the Journey
This experience was so impactful for me that I feel the need to share it. If you’re facing your own “dragons,” I recommend exploring this technique and seeing where it leads you. You might discover something powerful within yourself too.
